Murter - 'An island above all islands' as it is sometimes called. Surely, not without reason as Murter can certainly be considered unique tourist destination on Adriatic - in its history, beauty and, last but not least, its form (a narrow stretch connects it to the neighbouring islands).
It is believed that its name is derived from the word 'mortar', where grains used to be ground manually. Murter is the largest inhabited island in the Šibenik-Knin County, and it consists of two municipalities - Murter (the oldest and biggest town on island with about 2000 inhabitants) and slightly smaller town Tisno. The locals have traditionally been engaged in fishing and olive growing, but lately they are turning towards tourism. Visitors often describe it as a true Adriatic gem.
