Opatija an Adriatic pearl A- A A+

If the patrician Hignio Scarpa hadn't built his summer residence Villa Angiolina near the old Benedictine abbey near Volosko, who knows if Opatija would have come into existence at all. It was the beginning of the first tourist destination in Croatia. Built at the turn of the 20th century, Opatija has kept its harmonious relationship with nature to this day.

Well-kept parks, an illuminated beachside walk of 12km, clean beaches and fountains which provide a wonderful setting to numerous villas and hotels. Opatija was regularly visited by numerous European celebrities, kings and princes, writers, musicians and bons vivants. The Congress Centre, which seats 500 and 800, is the basis of business tourism.
